Project SET: Scholars’ Entrepreneurship Training reaches halfway mark!

Leave a Nest Philippines, Inc., in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), has just finished the first set of modules of Project SET: Scholars’ Entrepreneurship Training at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City, Philippines. In the first set of modules, scholars formed their teams and learned how to excavate deep issues, formulate their ideal technology, create small steps to reach their technologies’ goals, and make a research plan.

Modules 2 and 3: Excavating issues of society and team creation (February 18, 2023)

The second and third module was presented by Dr. Yevgeny Aster Dulla, Managing Director of Leave a Nest Philippines. In the second module, the scholars learned the importance of the Question-Passion-Mission-Innovation (QPMI) cycle in exploring deep issues in society, and how researchers are suited to blue ocean strategy or going into a business with minimal or no competition. Scholars pitched the issue they want to solve and the different degrees of their issue to make it more specific.

In the third module, the scholars grouped themselves into teams based on the issues they wanted to solve. Each team was tasked to pitch their mission statement and the specific issue they want to solve. 

Modules 4 and 5: Formulation of ideal technology and bringing technology to society (March 25, 2023)

The fourth module was presented by Ronezza Delos Santos, Director of Leave a Nest Philippines. In the fourth module, teams did a comparison of their technology to existing technologies to assess its uniqueness. The teams also explored possible co-incubations among their fellow teams or existing startups.

During the fifth module, scholars are assigned in identifying points of improvement in their tech via Question-Passion-Mission-Innovation (QPMI), creating a vision and small steps with marketable products to reach that goal (long term business plan). This assembly was headed by Mr. Kevin Anthony Sison MSc, FRSA, Director of Leave a Nest Philippines, who was very passionate to share his expertise and answer inquiries from the students. .

Module 6 summary: Making a research plan (April 29, 2023)

Mr. Peter Jeffry Maloles, MSc, Director of Leave a Nest Philippines led the sixth module of the program entitled, “Making a Research Plan”. In this syllabus he undertakes the understanding of the student’s technology uniqueness, as well as tailoring their research towards a long term business plan. Sir Jeff also outlines the Project SET Demo Day pitching guidelines, which include the uniqueness, impact, enthusiasm, and practicality of the academics' proposals. 

What’s next for our Project SET participants?

For the second half of Project SET, the scholars will learn fundamentals of intellectual property, ways of collaboration, and effective communication and presentation. Scholars will also attend panel discussions from deep technology senpais, both in the Philippines and Japan.

At the end of the program is the Demo Day during the first National Youth Science, Technology, and Innovation Festival (NYSTIF), where selected teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of local and Japanese judges.
