Global Algae Summit 2026 to Explore How Algae Can Turn Waste into New Economic Value
Can waste become the starting point for the next generation of sustainable products, technologies and businesses?
The Global Algae Summit (GAS) 2026, taking place on 19 August 2026 at Sunway University, will bring this question to the forefront through its featured panel discussion, “Turning Waste into Value with Algae.”
Held under the summit theme “The Algae Frontier: Catalysing Value and Impact,” the session will explore how algae-based technologies can contribute to a more circular economy by transforming underutilised resources and waste streams into higher-value applications.
From nutrient-rich wastewater and industrial by-products to carbon dioxide and organic residues, different waste streams could potentially serve as resources for algae cultivation. At the same time, cultivated algae can provide pathways towards products ranging from functional ingredients and biomaterials to biofuels and other sustainable industrial applications.

The session will also highlight the importance of looking beyond waste treatment alone. By viewing waste as a potential feedstock and resource, algae biotechnology could create opportunities to address environmental challenges while simultaneously generating new economic value.
Through this discussion, GAS 2026 aims to encourage stronger collaboration across sectors and identify practical pathways for advancing algae technologies from laboratories and pilot projects towards meaningful industrial and societal impact.
