Abstract

Meeting the Challenges of Establishing an Algal Industry

Countries like Malaysia, being situated in the Tropics and endowed with abundant sunshine, are well suited to the mass production of the algae. The microalgae market is predicted to reach USD 25.4 billion in 2033 while the global Algae Biofuel market will reach USD 14.65 million in 2029. The seaweed market will reach USD 16.43 billion in 2029. Why then is the market dominated by the United States, Europe, and China, with not a single Southeast Asian country appearing on the list? The big players like ExxonMobil who invested heavily in algal biofuel are said to be retreating from this sector. Others are turning to more promising products like functional and vegan foods, feed, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and body care products. What have been the challenges thus far, and how does geographical location influence the challenges to establishing a successful algal industry? Challenges to overcome include productivity and scalability of the production systems; economic viability; product diversification and market demand; sustainable funding; compliance with regulations especially on food safety; and consumer acceptance of the products. The Algae Biofuel Industry faces cost challenges from fossil fuel, reliable and consistent productivity as well as scale-up issues. Integration with wastewater treatment is a positive step toward circular bioeconomy and climate mitigation. Implementation of AI and digitization will enhance operational efficiency and productivity. Solutions to the challenges will be discussed, to bring us to recognize the potential of the Algae Industry as an emerging sector of the Blue Economy that meets the Sustainable Development Goals. Taking Malaysia as an example, we have the National Energy Policy, National Biomass Strategy, and a soon-to-be-launched National Energy Transition Roadmap. It is time to produce an Algae Technology Roadmap which will contribute to the success of the Algae Industry.
