[Leave a Nest 20th Anniversary Project・Part 7] 20 School Teachers Were Selected as “Education Development Fellows”. Launch of the Project to Confront Schools in the Changing Times!

Leave a Nest is the fruit of some young researchers who felt the appeal of science and technology more than anyone else and decided to take action by starting a science workshop for schools at a time when “children's disaffection for science” began to be treated as a serious social problem in Japan.

Since then, we have continued to test hypotheses and develop services even as the issues challenging schools have become increasingly diverse, as exemplified by the realization of curricula open to society, research activities, and independent and interactive in-depth learning opportunities. Some of these services have been introduced to schools in Japan and overseas in a pattern inherited from our science workshops.

The year 2022 will be a year of great change in school education in Japan, as the new curriculum guidelines, “The Power to Live”, will be fully enforced in high schools. Therefore, in order to identify the elements that require updating and have potential to color education in the future, we recruited teachers who would take on the challenge of finding and solving school issues.

As a result, we received applications from 40 teachers on a variety of themes, such as building a system for promoting research activities, seeking collaboration with local stakeholders, developing practical methods for cross-curricular classes, examining ways to foster student independence, developing evaluation systems, and developing tools to support class implementation. We have selected 20 teachers among them as “Education Development Fellows” and are launching this project to test their hypothesis by working with Leave a Nest.

Based on the themes set forth by the 20 Education Development Fellows, we have established the following five theme groups for this project. Through discussions in study groups and demonstrations in each school throughout the year, we plan to develop knowledge and concepts that will contribute to the development of future school education.

The five theme groups

  1. Development of school initiatives to foster students' independent action
  2. Development of methods for inter-school research in secondary education
  3. Investigation on teacher team building and teaching methods in research activities
  4. Development of implementation methods and consideration of the significance of establishing a laboratory based on local resources within school institutions
  5. Implementation of evaluation of original programs using student excitement analysis
