NEST Workshop: Turning Used Cooking Oil into Scented Candles

Selangor, Malaysia- On 24 May 2023, Leave a Nest Malaysia successfully conducted a NEST Workshop at SMK Convent Jalan Peel. The workshop, titled “Be Wicked Chandler,” aimed to educate students on the innovative process of transforming used cooking oil into scented candles. The workshop was attended by 40 students from SMK Convent Jalan Peel.

It was led by our Teaching Manager, Syazwani, our intern from Universiti Putra Malaysia. The workshop's concept originated from Syazwani and was supported by members of Leave a Nest.We are grateful for the generous support received from our sponsors: Arus Oil, who provided used and filtered cooking oil; Earth Theories, who sponsored essential oils; and Abmanan, who sponsored gifts for all participants and teachers.During the workshop, participants engaged in a hands-on experiment to learn about bioentrepreneurship by utilizing used cooking oil to create scented candles. Essential oils were incorporated to add fragrance to the candles, and students were encouraged to bring their own decorative materials to personalize their creations.

Furthermore, the workshop emphasized the importance of environmental awareness, teaching students how to properly dispose of cooking oil and providing insights into the chemistry behind candle making.Overall, the NEST Workshop was a resounding success, fostering creativity, environmental consciousness, and entrepreneurial spirit among the students of SMK Convent Jalan Peel. We look forward to organizing more engaging and educational workshops in the future
