Global Algae Summit 2024 Unlocks the Potential of Algae for a Sustainable Future

Subang Jaya, Malaysia – August 15, 2024 – The Global Algae Summit (GAS) 2024 successfully concluded at Monash University Malaysia, bringing together experts, industry leaders, and researchers to explore the latest innovations in algae technology. Under the theme “Unlocking the Power of Algae in Southeast Asia,” the summit focused on algae’s applications in renewable energy, sustainability, and human nutrition.
Organized by Leave a Nest Malaysia, in collaboration with Monash University Malaysia and Euglena Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., GAS 2024 provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers. The event featured a keynote address, panel discussions, short presentations, and poster sessions, attracting 188 participants from various sectors, including universities, government agencies, startups, and multinational corporations.
GAS 2024 saw a diverse mix of 188 participants from academia, industry, and government bodies, reflecting the growing interest in algae-based solutions. A significant portion of attendees came from leading universities, with strong representation from Monash University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The summit also attracted professionals from corporations, including those in the biotechnology, energy, and food industries, as well as representatives from research institutions and governmental agencies. Additionally, international participants from overseas universities and organizations contributed to enriching discussions on global algae advancements.
Key Highlights:
1. Keynote Address:
Renowned algae expert Professor Dr. Yusuf Chisti from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu delivered an insightful presentation on “Microalgae: Production, Products, and Applications,” highlighting the potential of algae as a sustainable resource for biofuels, nutraceuticals, and environmental solutions. He emphasized the role of microalgae in CO2 capture, high-value biomaterials, and next-generation food production.
2. Panel Discussions:
- Renewable Energy & Sustainability: Moderated by Assoc. Prof. Ooi Chien Wei of Monash University Malaysia, this session brought together experts from BRIN, PETRONAS, Innoqua, and Galdieria Co., Ltd. to discuss scalable algae-based solutions for biofuels, carbon capture, and sustainable waste management. Key takeaways included the need for public-private partnerships and investment in scalable algae technologies.
- Algae for Human Nutrition: Led by Dr. Sharifah Nabihah from Leave a Nest Malaysia, panelists from ProBio-Engineering, Monash University, and Euglena Malaysia explored algae’s potential in enhancing global food security, tackling malnutrition, and developing functional foods enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, and antioxidants.
3. Pocket Talk Sessions:
Industry leaders and researchers, including representatives from NTT R&D, Fresh Spirulina Farm, PT. ALBITEC, and BRIN, shared their groundbreaking work in algae applications, ranging from carbon sequestration and wastewater treatment to the production of alternative proteins and bioplastics. These rapid presentations fostered engagement between stakeholders and generated new ideas for collaborative projects.
4. Poster Session & Awards:
A total of 41 research posters were showcased, featuring cutting-edge research on algae cultivation techniques, bioproduct development, and commercial applications. Among the highlights was a study on microalgae-based wound healing agents and biofuels derived from marine algae. The Best Poster Awards recognized three outstanding contributions that demonstrated innovation and practical applications in algae research.
To encourage knowledge-sharing and innovation, GAS 2024 ensured that poster participation was free of charge, removing financial barriers and enabling researchers from diverse backgrounds to present their work. This initiative underscored the summit’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where ideas and scientific advancements can be exchanged freely.
5. Industry & Academic Collaboration:
GAS 2024 attracted a diverse range of participants, including scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and government representatives. Discussions focused on algae commercialization, investment opportunities, and policy frameworks to accelerate industry growth. The event also provided a crucial networking platform for emerging startups and research groups seeking partnerships for future projects.
