Entering the “Land of Gold” – Opportunities and Insights for Startups @SWITCH 2020

On Wednesday the 9th of December, as part of the ongoing SWITCH 2020, and as the Global innovation Alliance (GIA) partner for Tokyo, Leave a Nest, Singapore  (LAN) took part in the “Market Access: Japan- Trends, Opportunities & How to Enter Session”. The session was curated to cater to deep tech from all over the world especially Singapore, for them to learn about and get insights about the Japan Market, including strategies to enter.

The session was divided into 2 sections. The first section involved presentations from JETRO (Topics 1& 2) & LAN (Topic 3) to cover topics such as

1. Overview of the current Japanese market (with relation to Impact of COVID & Digitalisation) 
2. Entering Japanese market for Startups &     
3. Enter to Japan market program for startups, as a first step towards entering & accessing Japan market.

The presentations was followed by panel discussion ” Opportunities for startups entering the Japanese market and Sharing of experiences”. The session was moderated by Enterprise Singapore ( Japan Office) and the panelists included members from JETRO, LAN , Sentient.io and Meracle.

A few tips take home messages from the panel towards the startups were                   

1. Not to hesitate about possible challenges and difficulties but to maintain the “Just Do It” attitude.
2. The best way to engage large Japanese corporates would actually be through their local subsidiaries via pilot projects or POC.
3. It is wise for Int'l startups to always have local partners to help navigate local regulatory issues as get local insights.
4. “Patience is a virtue” as convincing and gaining trust from Japanese companies is generally time consuming, but once the relationship is forged they always longterm and lasting.
