Support for Niche Academic Disciplines in the Regional Areas: Memorandum of Understanding between Central Philippine University and Leave a Nest Philippines

ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Living by its identity as a Knowledge Manufacturing Company, Leave a Nest continues to bridge science and technology to the people and industry in order to help create technologies that solve problems and issues. Driven by its mission to “Harmonizing Science and Technology Stakeholders for the Empowerment of Filipinos”, Leave a Nest Philippines continues to forge joint initiatives with institutions to push forward innovation and entrepreneurship among students and researchers. For 2024, Leave a Nest Philippines’ goal is to “Bring Together Archipelago,” and true to this, it has been actively looking for partnerships in the regional areas.

Through that, Leave a Nest Philippines (LVNS PH), represented by Managing Director Dr. Yevgeny Aster Dulla, and Central Philippine University (CPU), represented by University President Rev. Dr. Ernest Howard B. Dagohoy, have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding last October 28, 2024 at Admin Conference Room, Central Philippine University in order to develop the deep technology and deep technology startup ecosystem focusing on academic fields that CPU promotes and are relatively rare within the region, or the country.

Co-organized by CPU’s Technology Business Incubator (TBI), CPUGAD TBI, represented by its Project Leader Engr. Gelvie C. Lagos and Manager Mr. Mark Gil D. Peraman, this collaboration is dedicated to providing incubation and scaling support, enhancing the Philippines' potential in innovation and entrepreneurship, and aims to foster the growth of startups, spin-off companies, and research and development (R&D) commercialization. Particularly, this partnership supports creating and developing more deep tech startup activities specifically for R&D-based or spin-off companies in the field of packaging engineering, wind energy technology, and agriculture (particularly avian science) – contributing to more knowledge manufacturing activities in the Philippines. These fields are some of the unique focus areas of CPU and are supported by their key representatives including Dr. Esther Rose A. Romarate (VP for Student Affairs), Dr. Florence P. Bogacia (VP for Finance & Enterprises), Engr. Jeriel Militar (Head of Mechanical Engineering Department/Project Leader, Wind R&D Facility), Engr. Bernie C. Cangrejo (Head of Packaging Engineering Dept.), Dr. Aries Roda D. Romallosa (Department Head of Agricultural Engineering  & Environmental Management), and Prof. Rae Marie G. Leong-on (BS Entrepreneurship Program Coordinator) who are in the signing ceremony as well.

This Memorandum of Understanding between Leave a Nest Philippines and Central Philippine University marks a significant step toward building a robust deep technology and startup ecosystem in the Philippines. By harnessing the university's unique strengths in packaging engineering, wind energy technology, and avian science, this partnership paves the way for transformative advancements that address real-world challenges through research-driven solutions. With shared expertise and a commitment to fostering innovation, this collaboration not only empowers students and researchers but also strengthens the nation's capacity for knowledge manufacturing.

As a result of the MOU partnership, there are already initial discussions of working together, including having the CPUGAD TBI as a poster judges for the Scholars’ Entrepreneurship Training Program (STTP), which is spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology –  Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), as well as possible benchmarking activities in Japan, and even the involvement of LVNS PH in hackathon programs organized by CPUGAD TBI.

LVNS PH is very much excited with the results of the collaboration especially since CPU pushes forward with a number of academic fields that are not being pursued by other academic institutions – which is very much what the Leave a Nest Group aims to support.
