[20th Anniversary Project – 1] Establishment of NEST EdLAB, a Subsidiary Specialized in Talent Development for Elementary and Middle School Students, Providing a Curriculum that Brings Together the Expertise of Leave a Nest’s Researchers
On 26 January 2022, Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Founder & Group CEO Dr. Yukihiro Maru) established NEST EdLAB, a subsidiary specialized in nurturing the talents of elementary and middle school students, based on the philosophy of “realizing a world where everyone can become an ‘adult’ that pursues what they love”.
NEST EdLAB has developed its own curriculum, offered through its online school, with the goal to discover and nurture the talents of elementary and middle school students by utilizing the expertise in education, human resources, research, and business creation that Leave a Nest, as a group of researchers, has been accumulating over the past 20 years since its establishment.
Its appointed directors are Mr. Daigo Fujita (Representative Director), Mr. Sou Ijichi, and Mr. Shota Nakashima from Leave a Nest.
Background and Purpose of Establishing the Subsidiary
Since its establishment in 2001, Leave a Nest has been pioneering the Science Workshop as the first company in Japan to turn this concept into a business. With the aim of “turning familiar mysteries into interests,” we strive to bring the fun and appeal of science and technology to educational environments. To date, we have made science and technology accessible to over 200,000 children by collaborating with 106 companies, working to inspire the next generation of fellow researchers.
In 2011, we launched a school in the fields of robotics, bio, and agriculture as a B-to-C business, by leveraging our education development expertise cultivated through the Science Workshop to provide a place where elementary school students can discover and nurture their talents.
Based on these achievements, we became the only private company to be selected for the JST “Junior Doctor Training School” project in 2016. In this project, we provided a systematic curriculum aimed at identifying highly motivated elementary and middle school students with outstanding abilities, then fostering and developing their talents.
In the decade since the school's inception in 2011, 1,019 elementary and middle school students have graduated from it. With that success in mind, NEST EdLAB Co., Ltd. was established to identify and cultivate the talents of even more children, ultimately creating a world where anyone can develop into an “adult” who pursues their favorite subject. Striving to offer borderless educational opportunities both domestically and internationally, NEST EdLAB will design a curriculum that enhances the ability to value one's passions through real-life experiences, even in online classes.
In FY2022, we will begin operating “NEST EdLAB., the Talent Discovery Institute for Elementary and Middle School Students” embodying the philosophy of “creating knowledge by pursuing what you love”. NEST EdLAB, has established two courses, the Sustainable Science Course and the Robot AI Technology Course, based on the “Nature, Engineering, Science, and Technology (NEST Education)” concept, and incorporating learning experiences that allow each student to pursue their own passion.
We will begin accepting applications from students in January 2022, with courses scheduled to commence in April 2022.

Thoughts on the Establishment
Through the school business we started in 2011, over the past ten years we have developed a curriculum to designed to respect the passions of curious children as much as possible and assist them in reaching their full potential. On the other hand, both in Japan and around the world, numerous elementary and middle school students are eager to pursue their passions but have not yet been discovered or nurtured. Consequently, we decided to establish this subsidiary to accelerate the process of providing these students with opportunities to develop their talents. By creating an environment that encourages them to embrace the joy of pursuing their passion from a young age, we aim to build a world where students can continue to utilize their talents even after becoming “adults”.

Sustainable Science Course
“Let's discover the science hidden in our daily lives!”
Environment, food, energy, marine debris… With so many social issues being discussed, it is essential to address the question of sustainability in order for humans to continue living on Earth. We must broaden our perspective to include not just humans, but also nature, living creatures, and the entire ecosystem. This entails observing the world around us and asking questions to ourselves. In this course, children's pure curiosity serves as the starting point for repeated questioning and the discovery of the science hidden in the world around them, as we work together to create a sustainable society.
Robotics and AI Technology Course
“Let's invent technologies to solve familiar problems!”
Languages, ships, paper, cameras, automobiles, satellites, internet, rockets, AI… Since the Paleolithic Era, mankind has been inventing a multitude of things. Progress is unstoppable, and new inventions continue to emerge. In recent years, rapidly developing AI and robotic technologies have become increasingly accessible, allowing anyone to utilize them in creating new inventions. In this course, students will learn about each technology from the basics, and combine their knowledge to create new technologies themselves in order to solve problems around them.
