Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. was founded in 2002 by 15 graduate and undergraduate science and engineering students, with the vision of “Advancing Science and Technology for Global Happiness”, and has been operating a knowledge manufacturing business by extracting the expertise of different fields through its Education, Human, Research, and Frontier Development businesses to combine it into new projects and businesses that contribute to solving global issues.

Since 2010, we have been strengthening our Southeast Asian approach to spread this concept throughout the world by establishing subsidiaries in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and expanding our activities with local members.

In order for Japan to join hands with Southeast Asia, whose population is expected to increase and grow rapidly in the future, in 2016 we launched the “Inbound Globalization“concept/activity, which aims to bring knowledgeable entrepreneurs from Southeast Asia to Japan and help them expand into the world through Japanese manufacturing, development, management and commercialization support.

In Japan, where the aging population and declining birthrate are having a strong impact, and entire regions are being swallowed by the wave of decline, the key to revival is for local SMEs, which account for 99.7% of Japanese companies, to transcend the existing concept of manufacturing and look to Southeast Asia and other countries to engage in Knowledge Manufacturing together with local partners.

Leave a Nest, which has celebrated its 20th anniversary on 14 June 2022, will unveil all its ideas and expertise through this book with the purpose of promoting cooperation between Japan and Southeast Asia towards achieving global contribution in the next 20 years, and build the “New Era of Knowledge Manufacturing” with SMEs in Japan.

Book Introduction

This book aims to be the spark that will trigger Japan's revitalization by installing the Knowledge Manufacturing expertise, promoted by Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. since its inception, in SMEs, which account for 99.7% of all enterprises in Japan.

Founded in 2002 by 15 graduate and undergraduate students of science and engineering, Leave a Nest is composed of individuals who model a Mission to solve issues based on their own Question and Passion, and then gather and combine their knowledge with many other members to create new knowledge and lead to Innovation. All of our employees are researchers with a master's or doctoral degrees, and we have always conducted our business with the attitude of “setting up the world's firsts”. In order to achieve our vision of “Advancing Science and Technology for Global Happiness”, we are developing our business in the the four areas of education, human resources, research, and new businesses, Additionally, we are working to root the business and concept of Leave a Nest in the global arena as well starting with five countries, i.e. the ASEAN’s Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Knowledge Manufacturing is at the core of all of these activities.

Right now Japan is greatly affected by the issue of its aging population and declining birthrate, and the society is beginning to break down everywhere. The situation is particularly serious outside the three major metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, and it is no exaggeration to say that entire regions are being swallowed by the wave of decline. Along with this, also the knowledge and technology that local SMEs have created over time is being lost. However, by shifting our vision and look around the world, we can notice that while markets in Southeast Asia and other emerging countries are growing rapidly, various problems are piling up exponentially due to the lack of knowledge and technology. In today's world, where sustainable growth is essential to fight back the climate change and the biodiversity crisis, strategies that focus solely on economic growth are not realistic. Therefore, the lack of knowledge and technology is a factor that hinders the growth of emerging economies themselves.

We believe that the concept of Knowledge Manufacturing can create harmony in this imbalance between growth and knowledge and transform human activities into global contribution. Moreover, we are convinced that Japanese SMEs, which account for 99.7% of all companies in Japan, can be the catalyst for such a shift. At this juncture, Japan must return to its roots, sharpen its mind, and send out a strong vector toward the future, which will inexorably pioneer the next era.
