NEST Workshop Inspires Young Minds Through Science and Food Exploration

Cyberjaya, 23rd January 2025 – The NEST Workshop Series, organized by passionate Leave a Nest members, kicked off during the school break at The Center of Garage, delivering an exciting, hands-on learning experience for future innovators.

The first session welcomed 13 enthusiastic children, aged 7 to 12 years old, for a full-day immersive workshop centered around the science of food. Running from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the workshop introduced young learners to the fascinating science hidden in their everyday meals.

Morning Session: Science on Your Plate – Healthy Eating Habits

The day began with an engaging session led by Ir. Dr. Nor Ilia Anisa, titled “Science on Your Plate: Healthy Eating Habits.” Through interactive experiments, participants explored the science behind food and nutrition, including:

(i) Acidic & Alkaline Exploration – Using red cabbage solution as a natural pH indicator, children tested the acidity and alkalinity of different foods, learning about their effects on health.
(ii) Stomach Simulation: Fizz & Foam Experiment – A fun, hands-on demonstration mimicking how the stomach reacts when acidic foods are introduced, helping children visualize digestion processes.
(iii) Healthy Meal Balance Craft – Participants creatively designed their own balanced meals, reinforcing the importance of proper nutrition.

Afternoon Session: The Science Behind Ice Cream

The excitement continued in the afternoon as Dr. Mohd Izwan Zainol led an interactive session on the chemistry of making ice cream. Through a fun, hands-on experiment, participants discovered the science behind achieving the perfect texture and consistency.

(i) Understanding the role of temperature, salt, and ingredients in ice cream formation.
(ii) Experimenting with different variables to observe how they affect the final product.

By the end of the session, young participants not only enjoyed making their favorite frozen treat but also gained a deeper appreciation for the science in their everyday meals!
