Global Algae Summit 2026 to Examine the Role of Algae in Carbon Markets
As global efforts toward decarbonisation accelerate, carbon markets are increasingly being explored as an important mechanism for mobilising climate action and investment. Yet an important question remains: Can algae-based solutions realistically become part of credible and commercially viable carbon markets?
The Global Algae Summit (GAS) 2026, taking place on 19 August 2026 at Sunway University, Malaysia, will address this question through the panel discussion “Algae and Carbon Markets: Vision or Reality?”
The session will bring together experts representing carbon research, green technology and climate strategy, academia, standards and industry ecosystem development to examine how algae could contribute to carbon reduction, carbon accounting and future carbon value creation.

From Scientific Potential to Credible Carbon Value
Algae have attracted growing attention for their ability to utilise carbon dioxide while generating valuable biomass that can potentially be transformed into fuels, materials, food ingredients and other bioproducts. However, translating this scientific potential into recognised carbon value requires more than demonstrating carbon uptake.
The panel will explore critical questions surrounding carbon accounting, life-cycle assessment, measurement and verification, technology readiness, standards, policy support and commercial scalability.
The discussion will also examine what evidence is required for algae-based solutions to participate credibly in carbon markets and how researchers, technology developers, government agencies, standards organisations and businesses can work together to establish trusted pathways toward carbon monetisation.
Bridging Research, Policy and Market Readiness
From the research perspective, the session will consider how algae technologies can move beyond laboratory outcomes toward measurable climate and commercial impact.
At the same time, perspectives from MGTC, SIRIM and carbon specialists will provide a broader understanding of the ecosystem required to support emerging climate technologies — including appropriate standards, credible carbon measurement frameworks, policy readiness and market mechanisms.
