Meet the new member of FD! Fariz: Linking people through an ocean of knowledge as an Oceanographer

Hello everyone!
My name is Fariz Syafiq and I just joined Leave a Nest Malaysia Frontier Development Department in February, 2025. Equipped with a Master’s of Science in Oceanography from University Terengganu Malaysia (UMT) and a Bachelor’s in Marine Technology from Universiti Teknologi Mara Perlis(UiTM), My focused is on the effects of the climate change and its impact towards the ocean and coastal areas. Based on previous research and what we can see today, there is no denying that climate change will bring a huge change towards the environment and this would affect many people. Hence, I prioritised on creating awareness towards the importance of the environment especially the ocean and how we can make it sustainable so that the future generations can also enjoy what we have today.
Although my background of study is in the marine field but that does not mean I should only be focusing only on one field. In recent years, I have gained relevant knowledge and experience in the field of data science, Banking (Personal financing) and Compliance (KYC). Combing through each of these field has taught me that one cannot exist alone such as ideas are only ideas unless, it is make happen. This realisation made me realise just how crucial networking is. It is important for a person, entity or business to work with each other and create an ecosystem that will allow them to create more opportunities and improve themselves and others at the same time.
As a Sarawakian-born, my journey in discovering more about the ocean has led me from the island of Borneo to the West coast of Peninsular and also the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The difference I felt is not only in term of depth of the ocean in different areas but also the difference in culture of the people and their lifestyle. I believe everyone is different and is unique in their own ways. Hence, joining Leave a Nest Malaysia in the Frontier Development team gives me the opportunity to meet new people, startups, universities and companies and see their uniqueness in term of ideas, technology and innovation while also connecting these people with one another for collaboration to achieve the same vision as Leave a nest, ‘Advancing Science and Technology for Global Happiness’.
